A worked example

What is the value of -8  −  (−\; - \; (-3)  +  ) \; + \;4?
  1. Evaluate -8  −  (−\; - \; (-3)  +  ) \; + \;4
  2. First, rewrite any double negatives. Subtracting a negative is the same as adding: −  (−n)  =  +  n- \; (-n) \; = \; + \; n
  3. Rewritten: -8  +  \; + \;3  +  \; + \;4
  4. Now evaluate left to right:
  5. -8  −  (−\; - \; (-3)  =  ) \; = \;-8  +  \; + \;3  =  \; = \;-5\\-5  +  \; + \;4  =  \; = \;-1
  6. The answer is -1
