A worked example

What is 15\frac{1}{5} written as a decimal?
  1. We need to find the decimal form of 15\frac{1}{5}. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
  2. Divide 1  ÷  51 \; \div \; 5:
  3. 5 ) ‾0.25 ) 1.0‾10‾0\begin{array}{r} \phantom{5\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,}}0.2 \\ 5\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,1.0} \\ \underline{10} \\ 0 \end{array} \\[6pt]5 does not go into 1 (since 1 < 5), so the whole-number part is 0. We place a decimal point and bring down a 0 to continue dividing. Now we have 10.\\5 goes into 10 exactly 2 times→5×2=10\to 5 \times 2 = 10. Subtract→10−10=0\to 10 - 10 = 0. No remainder
  4. Therefore 15=\frac{1}{5} =0.2.
