    Answer:
    15
  2. Translate Words into One-Step Equations

Which equation matches: the difference between a number and 7 is 3
    • n + 7 = 3
    • n ÷ 7 = 3
    • n - 7 = 3
    • 7n = 3
    Show answer
    Answer:
    n - 7 = 3
  3. Compare Inverse Operations with Guess and Check

    A student uses guess and check to solve n  −  6  =  0n \; - \; 6 \; = \; 0. Which value works?
    • n = 7
    • n = 6
    • n = 5
    • n = 8
    Show answer
    Answer:

A worked example

Solve: t   −  t\, \; - \;9  =  \; = \;6
  1. We need to solve t  −  t \; - \;9  =  \; = \;6.\\The goal is to get t t\, by itself on one side of the equation.
  2. Look at what is happening to t  t\,\,: the number 9 is subtracted from it.\\To undo subtraction, we use the inverse operation: addition.\\Add 9 to both sides to keep the equation balanced:
  3. t   −  t\, \; - \;9  +  \; + \;9  =  \; = \;6  +  \; + \;9t   =  \\ t\, \; = \;15
  4. The answer is t   =  t\, \; = \;15.
