A worked example

Find the sum of 12  +  310\frac{1}{2} \; + \; \frac{3}{10}.
  1. Add 12  +  310\frac{1}{2} \; + \; \frac{3}{10}. The denominators are different, so we cannot add the numerators directly. We need to rewrite the fractions so they share the same denominator.
  2. Since 10 ÷ 2 = 5, 10 is a multiple of 2, so the LCD = 10.10÷2=5\\ 10 \div 2 = 5, so 12=1×52×5=510\frac{1}{2} = \frac{1 \times 5}{2 \times 5} = \frac{5}{10}.310\\ \frac{3}{10} already has denominator 10.
  3. Now add the numerators→510+310=5+310=810\to \frac{5}{10} + \frac{3}{10} = \frac{5 + 3}{10} = \frac{8}{10}.
  4. Simplify 810\frac{8}{10}. The GCD of 8 and 10 is 2, so divide both by 2→8÷210÷2=45\to \frac{8 \div 2}{10 \div 2} = \frac{4}{5}.
