A worked example

What is the result of 3 ) 85‾ 3\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,85}\,?
  1. We need to find 3 ) 85‾ 3\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,85}\,. Here 85  \;is the dividend and 3  \;is the divisor. The answer will have a quotient and a remainder.
  2. 3 ) ‾283 ) 85‾65‾2524‾1\begin{array}{r} \phantom{3\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,}}28 \\ 3\,\overline{\smash{\big)}\,85} \\ \underline{6\phantom{5}} \\ 25 \\ \underline{24} \\ 1 \end{array} \\3 goes into 8, 2 times→3×2=6\to 3 \times 2 = 6. Subtract→8−6=2\to 8 - 6 = 2. Bring down to get 25\\3 goes into 25, 8 times→3×8=24\to 3 \times 8 = 24. Subtract→25−24=1\to 25 - 24 = 1. The remainder is 1
  3. The quotient is 28  \; with a remainder of 1 \,.
  4. Check: 28  ×  \; \times \;3  +  \; + \;1  =  \; = \;84  +  \; + \;1  =  \; = \;85  ✓\; \checkmark
