A worked example

What are the quotient and remainder when 35,657 is divided by 1,000?
  1. We need to find the quotient and remainder of 35,657  ÷  \; \div \;1,000. Here 35,657 is the dividend (the number being divided) and 1,000 is the divisor (what we divide by).
  2. Ask: how many whole groups of 1,000 fit inside 35,657? Try 35 groups: 35  ×  \; \times \;1,000  =  \; = \;35,000. That fits, because 35,000 is not more than 35,657. So the quotient is 35.
  3. Now subtract to find what is left over: 35,657  −  \; - \;35,000  =  \; = \;657. The remainder is 657.
  4. Check: the remainder 657 is smaller than the divisor 1,000, so we know 35 was the right number of groups.
  5. Answer: 35 R 657
